I’ll start off by saying I’m not a big fan of leather or shoes (you can find out the fascinating reasons why here and here, respectively).

However, I recognize that people are going to buy their kids shoes. And this style is pretty innocuous–with an inexpensive, indie option to boot (ugh–no pun intended. Should I have deleted that?). To wit:

Robeez shoes Minitoes

Robeez on the left. Minitoes, an Etsy seller, on the right. I picked these fruit shoes for comparison, but both sellers have a pretty large–and cute–selection (and Minitoes does custom orders), a variety of sizes, reasonable shipping costs, etc.

The biggest difference: the mass-manufactured pair costs $26. The indie pair, $15.
